uprise pacific islander education summit

Oceans Apart:  Educators and the Pacific Islander Student

Participants will receive an introduction to the history of education in the Pacific Islands and it's evolving role among Pacific Island cultures.  PI student performance statistics will be analyzed and, through critical dialogue, participants will evaluate current research based engagement strategies and create new strategies to effectively engage and empower the PI students of today.

Facilitator:  Annie Patu
  • Annie has served children and youth in the South Seattle and Tacoma communities for over 25 years.  She is currently the Executive Director for Urban Family, a non-profit organization that serves youth in South Seattle and Skyway.  She is a high school teacher and administrator.  She earned her undergraduate degree at Seattle Pacific University and will complete her Masters in Educational Leadership at City University in June.  She has a heart for youth and is a strong advocate for improving education opportunities for Pacific Islander students and their families.  Annie is the proud mother of three daughters, who have been the inspiration for her work in education.
